Anorthosite Thin Sections (cont.) 2.2 Secondary Minerals Quartz. Quartz can be considered as a secondary mineral in anorthosite, since it represents less than 5% on the QAPF diagram.

Strictly speaking, the name “anorthosite” is applied to a rock composed of 90 to 100 of calcium-rich plagioclase feldspar and small amounts of high temperature minerals like pyroxene, olivine, magnetite (Fe3O4) or ilmenite (FeTiO3). Feldspar is a very common mineral and occurs in virtually all igneous rocks, but rocks containing 90%+ calcium feldspar are less common. Anorthite is the calcium endmember of the plagioclase feldspar mineral series. The chemical formula of pure anorthite is Ca Al 2 Si 2 O 8. Anorthite is found in mafic igneous rocks. Anorthite is rare on the Earth but abundant on the Moon. 6 - Franklin Minerals(Dunn) 7 - Franklin Minerals(Palache) 8 - GeoScienceWorld 9 - Google Images 10 - Google Scholar 11 - Handbook of Mineralogy (MinSocAm) 12 - Handbook of Mineralogy (UofA) 13 - HyperPhysics 14 - MinDAT 15 - Mineral and Gemstone Kingdom 16 - Mineralienatlas (Deutsch) 17 - Online Mineral Museum 18 - QUT Mineral Atlas 19 - Ruff.Info Anorthosite - Medium to coarse grained, light to dark bluish gray, predominantly plagioclase; local alteration minerals.

Anorthosite (Probably lower Paleozoic) Tennessee 2019-02-18 · A rock consisting of only plagioclase is called anorthosite. A noteworthy occurrence of this unusual rock type makes up the heart of New York's Adirondack Mountains (see the next page of this gallery); another one is the Moon. This specimen, a gravestone, is an example of anorthosite with less than 10 percent dark minerals. Anorthosite mineral information Sulfide Mineral Photos. From Earth, lunar anorthosite is visible as the light-colored, highly reflective parts of the Moon’s surface known as the lunar highlands.

Anorthite is rare on the Earth but abundant on the Moon. Most anorthosite in the western part of the Marcy massif is relatively massive, allowing Davis (1971) to map anorthosite in the St. Regis quadrangle by mafic mineral content. Crosby (1969) attempted to classify anorthosite by mineralogy by marking large areas on outcrops and counting enclosed mineral percentages, but found any simple classification difficult to map, as did Whitney and Olmsted Anorthosites also occur as inclusions in other igneous rocks ranging in composition from kimberlite to basalt to granite.

Anorthosites are typically gray or bluish, and are rather course grained. Individual crystals may be quite large. Amethyst Galleries '. Mineral Gallery. MINERALS. The composition of Gabbro and Anorthosite consists of mineral content and compound content. The mineral content of Gabbro includes Augite, Olivine, Plagioclase, Pyroxene and mineral content of Anorthosite includes Amphibole, Clinopyroxene, Ilmenite, Magnetite, Olivine, Orthopyroxene. All anorthosites found on Earth consist of coarse crystals, but some samples of the rock taken from the Moon are finely crystalline. Most anorthosites formed during Precambrian times.

The mafic mineral may be clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, olivine, or, more rarely, amphibole. Oxides, mostly magnetite or ilmenite, are also common. Anorthosite / ænˈɔr / is a phaneritic, intrusive igneous rock characterized by a predominance of plagioclase feldspar (90–100%), and a minimal mafic component (0–10%). Pyroxene, ilmenite, magnetite, and olivine are the mafic minerals most commonly present.
